Open Mic with Les Malheureux and Ash Dickinson (Jan 22)

8 – 11pm, Tuesday 22nd January
The Forest Café, 141 Lauriston Place, Edinburgh

The Inky Fingers Open Mic takes place every fourth Tuesday of the month, from 8-11pm. It’s free to come and free for anyone to perform, regardless of style, experience, or identity.

We want to hear from everybody. We want your poems, your rants, your ballads, your short stories, your diaries, your experimental texts, your heart, your mind, your body. We want the essay on your summer holidays you wrote when you were four, your adolescent haiku, and extracts from your eventually-to-be-completed epic fantasy quadrilogy. We want to hear your best new work as well. And we want people to care about the way words are performed.

This month we’re bringing you a feature from Manchester’s Les Maleureux! Les Malheureux is a collaboration between Manchester-based flash fiction writers David Gaffney, author of the critically acclaimed collections Sawn-off Tales, Aromabingo and The Half-life Of Songs plus the novel Never Never, and Sarah-Clare Conlon, editor of smutty anthology Quickies: Short Stories For Adults, which showcases filthy flash fiction from a number of well-known and award-winning writers. Les Malheureux combines live literature with original music and projections to deliver a new take on spoken word. Expansive emotions, sweeping plots and complex characters are distilled into something stranger than fiction!

We’ve also got a set from the incomparable Ash Dickinson. Ash  is a writer, poet and comedy performer. A multiple slam champion – including Edinburgh, Cheltenham and Solihull – Ash won the BBC Radio 4 Midlands Slam in 2009 and was runner-up in the 2011 UK All Stars Slam. He’s appeared on almost every stage in the UK, been published equally widely, and is generally great to be around.

Open Mic slots are five minutes long; e-mail to sign up and be sure of a slot, and check our website at for more details.
